I own a car! Well, I hired one. My job requires that I visit people in their homes, so I was introduced to my little Fiat 500 on Tuesday. Off-white, 2 doors (so that if I have an accident, I’m properly squished and more likely to die than be permanently disabled), and manual. A few issues...
Didn’t think 5 months of not driving a manual would be a problem. But as I drove it from Essex to Brighton and then to Kent with my new boyfriend Ken, I lost my knack. Every time I stopped at traffic lights and took the car out of gear, it would stall. If I put my foot back on the clutch, it would start up again without me turning the key. WEIRD.
Like all savvy girls (Ken wasn’t much help in this situation, he just told me where to go), I googled FIAT STALLS IN NEUTRAL, and realised, to my mild embarrassment but great relief, that this was the car’s fuel saving mechanism. I do sortof feel like every time it ‘stalls’ and then switches on again, that I should yell out the window, “it’s not my poor clutch point management, the car does this to save the trees, I promise!”. I’m sure the schoolkids walking by my car would scoff.
