Losing things on holidays

There's something profoundly upsetting about losing things on holidays. Realising you left something in a hotel room hundreds of kilometres later feels more depressing than not knowing where you left it. All hope of getting it back is gone.

A dear friend gave me a shower cap for my birthday a few years ago. Retro patterned waterproofed cotton, from a shop near where I worked, it had become one of my most treasured possessions.

I'm sad that I abandoned my treasured shower companion with such thoughtlessness, especially as it's come with me across houses, then continents and throughout my travels.
I can easily get another, but that smells of betrayal.

I at least hope the hotel staff had an admiring last look at it as they took it off the bathroom hook before they tossed it away.

  1. Breaking news! Turns out we went back to the same hotel a week later to stay another few nights, and they had kept my shower cap!

    Welcome back, old friend.
